A pillar of our education is the emphasis on the emotional, physical and mental health of our community members. We recognize it as a necessity for them to fully engage in learning and community life. This is why we understand human connection as one of the essentials in how we engage with our students and personnel. Our main focus is to create and develop healthy relationships within ourselves, our families and our community. We firmly believe in the power of healing and how it shifts our spirits to create the world we imagine.
There are 16 democratic schools in Brazil today. In Puerto Rico the schools network, Nuestra Escuela, offers alternative and democratic education to youth and adults. In June 2017 the first Latin American conference for new education will take place.

Learning “through one’s body” creates a non-verbal experience of presence in the ‘here and now’ and allows one to listen to themselves and to others on several physical and emotional levels.
During this workshop we will work on movement combining improvisation with “Rio Abierto” – which allows experience of sweeping movement and meditation, which aims to connect all. The verbal analysis of the experience will enable expansion of consciousness and assimilation of the learning tools of optimal listening and dialogue.

Anthony will talk about a narrative that is specific to his High Tech High journey and use the journey to show how his experiences have shaped his beliefs on equity and High Tech High’s other design principles.
Once people find out he was a student, academic coach, teacher and now dean at High Tech High, they are often shocked when they find out he didn’t build a robot that can walk on water, catch fish, bring it to his house and fry it. Instead of all of the projects, he tends to talk about the way his teachers and the content made him feel.
Departing from a theoretical framework for social justice – composed of three main tenants: redistribution, recognition and representation/participation (Frazer, 2008) – we intend to examine the challenges facing education for social justice and analyze the ways in which democratic education takes into account and implements such components in both public and private educational environments. The main goal is to create a space for people to share experiences and concerns, highlight courses of action, and identify key practices/actors in the consolidation of more civic attitudes that take into account the challenges and particularities of both our contexts and children.
DEDE started at APDEC in 20016. This work shop will share with you our progress so far and invite your comments, ideas and participation in continuing the project. We aim to create “a field of opportunity for people who want to learn the art of being a teacher or staff member in a democratic school”. That is by using a digital platform, the international network and regional and/or international meetings of democratic schools.

Recycle – Reuse – Re-Play is a unique initiative aimed at reuse of waste materials, and recycling by creation of a wide range of games for all ages. Some of the games are traditional childhood games, that make a “comeback” and entertain today’s kids and bring back sweet memories to their parents and grandparents. In the workshop we will get to know the Re-Play games via movement and play. We will also learn about the educational, environmental (sustainability) and social principles of Re-Play and how to incorporate them in pedagogic/educational and social settings in school, informal education, and the community https://www.facebook.com/mishcak.hoze
We shall take a short hike aimed at meeting as many of these creatures as possible – tenants, visitors or tourists of the “under the rock” microcosm. We shall attempt to identify most of them and make a list of our findings, a mini zoological survey of sorts. We shall also learn animal field signs – tracks, droppings, burrows etc. We shall learn of the safety regulations when doing such work and of legal limitations.
We will report our experience in our bilingual Arabic-Hebrew Centre with children and young people. in our process and methodology for education for peace and dialogue of narratives and solutions of conflicts by non-violent means.

In this workshop you`ll have the chance to experience a way of learning provided at our school. We challenge our learners with questions every time something new is introduced, whether it be a math lesson, a science experiment, a gallery exhibition or a visiting guest. As educators, we strive to develop questions that will allow the learners’ prior knowledge and suggestions to lead the discussion. In this way the self-esteem of our children grows and the group intelligence pulls everyone ahead.

The first story is about a student who transfers to our junior high school, and his thoughts about developing his talents with our Explorational learning and activities here.
The second story is about a student who transfers to our elementary school and gains confidence from the teachers and classmates.
In the third story, the teacher talks about the core idea of our education system, and how we adjust to an individual student’s personality.

Occupied Schools in Brazil
In 2015, as a reaction to a measure of the Sao Paulo state government that determined the closure of almost 100 high schools and the relocation of more than 300 thousand students, these students began to occupy their schools. In solidarity, other students did the same. In weeks, hundreds of schools were occupied and the government had to go back with and remove the measure. But, the movement spread throughout the country, students began to occupy their schools to demand for better quality. More than a thousand schools were occupied in all states of the federation. In the process, students took over the management of their schools, shared responsibility for space, and organized a varied program of lectures, and events with artists, intellectuals and other volunteers. There was a strong reaction from police and private militias, sometimes hired by right-wing groups recently organized in the country. Thus, occupations end and then resume, with new guidelines. It has been like this ever since. It is certainly one of the most important resistance movements in the country today.

The Organic Garden@Kindergarten in Bangkok has 200 SQM garden used by the Teachers and children to grow their own Vegetables & Herbs, Eat, cook and bring some home to the family. It is like a seed which starts helping and sharing communities in all aspects of life. From Children and Green it expands into sharing with families and communities, helping with Jobs, healthcare, infrastructure, community life and culture.

How can we bring democratic education to public spaces in the context of non formal education?
This lecture will be about the experience of a democratic summer camp, named City DIWO (do it with others), run last year and this year in Madrid, Spain. City DIWO is an adventure space where children between 7 and 12 years old, experience happiness and enjoy playing, imagining and co-creating. It is an experience of freedom for children, where they feel that their ideas and their choices are respected. It is a place of real participation where children decide what they want to do and how, transforming the fact of learning, in a live experience. Summarizing my experience in Givol as principal. Givol was founded as an alternative school, in a weakened neighborhood, with the explicit intention of allowing a place and home for heterogeneous communities, as opposed to the natural process of selection so characteristic of DE in other schools. The fantasy was to make Givol a home to a rich, respectful society, a home where all parts of society can find a place. In this meeting we will discuss insights, thoughts and answers, as well as some open questions who remain unanswered even today, more then a decade after Givol was opened.

The Center for Democratic Education is the first, and still the only Democratic School in Bulgaria. It was established in 2014 and has 40 students aged 5 to 12. The children choose their own educational plan and practice self-directed learning and self-government. Parents can participate in the school life in various ways, according to their free time, knowledge, and desire. The school, in its third year, without government support, still struggles to survive. Nevertheless, seeing the children guiding their own learning and with the faith they are given, perform up to their talents and true nature and become happy and socially active people, is a great source of inspiration.
The tools and practices that may be helpful for anyone who is creating or working in an alternative school. This collection is a direct result of a multi-year project researching good practices in different schools around the world. Many of the presented tools are a part of a Connected Education holistic approach presented in a separate workshop.
The basic principles of this holistic approach to education, resolving many dilemmas typical of democratic schools:
Are the kids guiding the adults on what they need from the school, or are the adults those who should guide the kids?
How much freedom and independence can or should kids have?
Should we make sure that kids learn enough specific hard skills at schools?

For 6 years now, Marko is running a virtual elementary school. He will share his experiences and talk about the virtual learning system.
In addition, Marko is involved in a project that is taking place in the slums of Pakistan. In 2 learning centers the students practice virtual learning, with the support of laptops and high quality internet.
A lecture combined with a hands-on workshop within which participants will become familiar with educational culinary therapy, hear about pedagogic and therapeutic kitchens in various schools in southern Israel, and will have a brief experience in pedagogy.
“Your Way” (bedarkech) project trains women educators to work with teenage girls using the circle method. During the workshop we will learn about the significance of the teacher as a feminist, non judgmental, model. We will also tackle the challenges facing the teacher, and will introduce some of the tools available for the teacher for facilitating a meaningful discussion.
We will discuss Systemically important steps towards a common educational space in morden society. The main idea is: there are different steps which could lead to start Democratic schools, but one thing is clear – the more participants, the better.

In my journeys in Israel and overseas to the depths of education and nature, to philosophies and practice, in my search for new paths, I have arrived to Yoga for Women. A whole world that opened to me. A world that built a bond between me and myself as a woman; between me and my body. A world that strengthened processes I have already started, that connected and renewed a dialogue – a fertile ground for development and growth, for learning and exploring, and for transferring the knowledge to other women.
For me, the strength of Yoga for Women lays in the continuous ripples that flow from the yoga mattress into life – into our patterns of movement and awareness; into our physical and emotional posture when we are faced with life’s challenges; and into our breathing.
The tools and language of Yoga for Women constitute an anchor for many women during times of crisis, menopause, pain, or illness. A compass that supports every process of improvement in quality of life and a constant invitation to embark on a fascinating journey of inner attentiveness, creativity, and connection.

In 2015, an Israeli national reform has been approved for the implementation of the Trajtenberg Committee’s recommendations and the adjustment of the quality of preschools to the present reality and to the future. Within this reform’s implementation process, the staff of the Early Childhood Education at the Institute for Democratic Education has mentored a system-wide process which is grounded in network-and-dialog-based work processes on all levels. This process constituted a meaningful leverage for the implementation of a democratic organizational culture as part of the educational staff’s field work.
The lecture will describe the collaboration between MASHAV (Israel’s agency for International Development Cooperation in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs) and the Institute for Democratic Education in the nursery schools’ area, for professional development of preschool teachers in three cities in Ghana. The goal of this process was to formulate an educational approach suited for the 21st century and had resulted in the creation of a meaningful process for the preschool teachers’ community as leaders of social change.

The Democratic School “Givol” in Givat Olga, Hadera
The school has developed an application that includes the creation of learning agreements as part of the personal mentoring process. This is an innovative technological tool, fit for democratic schools but also for personal learning processes as a whole. The application deals with 9 areas and skills needed in the 21th century.
Circles of motion facilitate inter and intra personal introduction with body and motion only and almost completely without words. These circles enable meeting, formation, and connection to the individual and the collective life energy out of inner attentiveness and plenty of joy and freedom.
Rio Abierto has changed my life! For me, the opportunity to instruct it in a democratic school is a way to express the principles of democratic education via a physical experience.
Unveiling the “Change in the education system” project which is comprised of two groups that work on educational change. The project was initiated by learning about public education and the desire to change it. The groups work in collaboration with the Experiments and Projects Division at the Israeli Ministry of Education, which assists in the development and realization of educational initiatives.
In the meeting, project members will share the learning, activity, and the attempts of children and youth to think and lead a change in the education system.
What does democratic music teaching look like? How can we integrate musical activities into our classroom/school settings in meaningful, fun, and creative ways that honor what the students would like to express? I invite participants to experience musical invention and communication that can be applied to a wide range of ages and settings. No musical expertise is needed to participate.

We will review the Preface to “Robert’s Rules for Kids and Big Kids” ( a book designed to enhance democratic decision-making not only in school but for the rest of a person’s life) and then roll-play areas of the book that are of greatest interest to the people assembled. Topics for consideration are the use of committee meetings and dictation to teach reading, the nine key elements of bylaws, the seven simple rules that govern committee meetings, the vocabulary of Robert’s, and how to run or participate in a board meeting that has more than 12 participants.

The Democratic School of Huamachuco (EDHU) is a community of learning, with its own point of view unique to the remote Andes. It builds an environment that breaks down the prevalent patterns of machismo, racism and economic inequality. It strives towards a more humane world, more accepting of each person to another.

In this hands-on workshop we will learn about the thought processes that hold us back when we wish to innovate and to change habits, specifically in the world of education. Together, we will uproot cognitive fixations and get to know three practical tools for systematic inventive thinking with which each and every one of us can think outside the box (the workshop is based on the SIT – Systematic Inventive Thinking – method).
In recent years, we witness how the term, entrepreneurship, penetrates into the world of education from the business world. Many organizations work to promote the development of an entrepreneurial culture in schools. However, attitudes towards this phenomenon vary. Some say that entrepreneurism will lead to improvement and change in the education system, while others treat it as a passing trend. We will try to understand together what is entrepreneurship in education, what are the conditions for its implementation in the system and whether it is good for it.
National Parents Network (Bulgaria) is a non-profit and non-governmental organization, active in the field of education and citizen’s rights of children and parents. The NPN have organized two international Conferences on Freedom in Education (2014 and 2016) with speakers from Israel, UK, Germany and Denmark (details on http://confercnce.nmr.bg). They also publish and sell books and speak publicly about democratization of schools, freedom from coercion in education, self-directed learning, grassroots initiatives and alternatives to the State-governed school system.
